Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The days of "Build it and they will come" are over. With the Internet becoming more and more crowded, it becomes increasingly difficult to get noticed in the crowd. The ultimate goal of any enterprising website owner is to achieve high rankings on the search engines. Getting sites listed well on search engines is known as Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

While Pay-Per-Click models can be highly effective, they can also be costly. This is where you are willing to pay to appear in the paid section of a search engine. Everytime someone clicks your link, you will be charged. On the other hand, getting listed naturally through Search Engine Optimzation will not cost you anything per click. When people search for
your keywords, you will be listed immediately under the paid section.

How SEO works

Just as SEO has become popular, so to have the number of SEO firms that have exploded onto the scene. It is now more important than ever to carefully screen your SEO firm to make sure they follow all the ethical standards of SEO. Do the wrong thing and your website can be banned from the search engine. SEO should always be performed in a consultative approach. It is not a matter of blindly submitting to the major search engines. Instead, it takes careful analysis of keywords, writing of pertinent articles and website optimization, all of which takes time and dedication.

Broadly speaking, SEO can be divided into two main categories: On-Page optimization and Off-Page optimization. We will explore both here:

On-Page Optimization

Search engines will attempt to catalog your site (known as "spidering"), based on your site content. It is therefore very important that your site clearly tells the search engine how it should be cataloged. This is done in numerous ways, and includes using the appropriate keywords (and paying attention to the keyword proximity, density and prominence), proper title tags, meta tags, image tags and many other techniques. Each page needs to be optimized individually. A golden rule to remember is that search engines optimize pages, not sites. Each page in your site should be optimized for one or two relevant keywords only.

Off-Page Optimization

Arguably, off- page optimization is as big if not bigger than on-page optimization. Off-page optimization includes all "external" factors that will influence your ultimate positioning on the search engines. As an example, if many respected websites link to your site, then your site will automatically be considered worthy of a good search engine ranking (provided your on-page optimization is up to par). As with on-page optimization, off-page optimization consists of numerous techniques, all of which must be followed consistently.
